SNL Season One is now on Netflix watch instantly. That means all of Albert Brooks’s short films.

I just watched the one (in Episode 3) where Brooks fulfills his lifelong goal of performing open-heart surgery. Need I mention that it’s genius?

I belonged on a stage, not in an operating room. But then I thought, wait a minute. Am I going to chicken out like everything else I’ve ever done?
Federal Funding (email list ringtone sample)
by CAKE

Another teeny-tiny taste of CAKE’s new album, due out who knows when. “Federal Funding” sounds awesome but I dunno. I want my political songs subtle. It’ll never be the same CAKE without Greg Brown. However, they recorded this whole album in a solar powered studio. THESE SOUNDS CAME FROM THE SUN.

Remember that episode of Doug where some kid named Todd begins obsessing over everything Doug likes until Doug can’t remember if he still even likes the things he likes?

It’s time to stop being skeptical about Vampire Weekend’s new album and start being excited. Cool video, too.

"The 'Going Rogue' Index": TNR's Seyward Darby literally writes the index mysteriously absent from Palin's book

"The 'Going Rogue' Index": TNR's Seyward Darby literally writes the index mysteriously absent from Palin's book:
summerstaycation:

Check it out; it’s quite a feat. There’s a high ratio of effort to output, which usually means a staffer got roped into hours of late-night work for the sake of a one-note (but clever) joke.

At TNR, certain triggers, like Sarah Palin, provoke a rabid zealotry that can inspire former reporters-researchers to read and index a 413-page biography in three days. In case you were wondering, it’s not so much a website or a magazine as it is a jihad.

I fully expected I would dislike this movie, yet came out loving it. The animation is not nearly as creepy or jumpy as it seems in the trailers. It looks great, it’s very funny, and it’s got just the right amount of Wes-Andersonishness.

Funny, though. I was thinking how great it would look in 3D. (Coraline was mind-blowing - stop-motion translates well.)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2009-11-15)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2009-11-15):

Bruce Springsteen bellowed “Hello, Ohio!” to his fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills. That’s in Michigan. The 60-year-old rock legend referred to the neighboring state several times Friday night until E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt whispered in his ear.

That’s like coming to LA and saying “Hello, Mexico!”

You Never Give Me Your Money - Steven Page and Kevin Hearn with...

You Never Give Me Your Money - Steven Page and Kevin Hearn with the Art of Time Ensemble

It always throws me off to see color footage of things one normally only sees in black and white. Black and white footage and photographs are easier to romanticise, while when you see the same image in color, it becomes more real and mundane…more everyday. You realize that the people in the images are just living their damn lives, just like you’re doigng now. When I was a small child I thought that life used to be in black and white, and somewhere around the 1970’s, color was invented. I still remember how utterly flabbergasted I was when I realized I was incorrect. I think black and white images still hold that idea for me somewhere in the recesses of my mind, so when I see things like the above video, I’m still a little blown away.

Friend Jeff brought over an advance copy of this new game yesterday. It’s fantastic.

Mario 64 revolutionized the platformer, but just because 3D Mario is fun, doesn’t mean 2D Mario is less fun. They did a great job taking what was good about Mario 1, 2, 3 and Mario World and adapting it to the Wii (incorporating many elements from those games.) I was disappointed there was no online multiplayer, but given the compeitive/collaborative structure of the game, it probably wouldn’t add much.

This is another great reason to own a Wii. This, unlike many other Mario experiments, feels canon.
